Managing Editor: Three small weekly newspaper company seeking an energetic, enterprising managing editor to head up operations of two neighboring community papers, The Clara City (MN) Herald and The Raymond-Prinsburg (MN) News. This position has never been offered before as it will chart a new course in operations for these two ‘next door’ weeklies with substantial common editorial interests. The successful candidate will replace a long-term editor (20 years) at one location, as well as a short-time editor at the second. Both are leaving on their own terms and in good graces with the publishers. One important facet of this position is that the editor must be willing to relocate to Clara City, MN, where the larger of the two weeklies is located. We are also seeking a person willing to integrate and become involved in the community and its activities. Some of the responsibilities of this new position include: •Heading up news gathering for both newspapers -- covering crucial local news stories and features -- coordinating free lance reporting, including sports -- competency in digital photography •Directing general sales strategies of both newspapers -- planning and implementing special projects in cooperation with other staff members -- assigning sales duties -- leading by doing, i.e. assuming a share of advertising sales responsibility  •Composition of newspapers -- guide overall creative pagination of both newspapers -- lead subordinate employees in assisting layout •Daily operations -- monitoring and mentoring fellow employees to utilize and further their talents -- maintain a good working relationship with employees and publishers -- cultivate a positive impression of the newspapers in the communities -- work diligently for the editorial and financial success of the newspaper company.
 In short, this person will need to be highly organized, energetic, creative and willing to play the chief role in producing high quality community newspapers. Pride in his or her work is essential. Knowledge of creating/maintaining a website will be considered a plus. We are using Macintosh computers and Adobe CS3 software. We are completely digital in our layout. Presently there are three other employees plus three free lance reporters working between the two offices. They provide news, feature and sports reporting, photography, composition and layout, sales, subscription and bookkeeping services. Additionally, these newspapers are located approximately 8 miles apart and both serve the consolidated MACCRAY school district. Each paper also covers two city councils (Clara City and Maynard, and Raymond and Prinsburg), and its county (Chippewa and Kandiyohi). The private CMCS school is covered by the R-P News. Candidates for this position will be asked to submit their ideas for moving forward with one overall managing editor, and best applying the human and physical assets of The Clara City Herald and Raymond-Prinsburg News -- keeping in mind the additional ‘sister’ newspaper, The Kerkhoven Banner which works in harmony to the extent possible with the Herald and News.
