Director of Community Engagement: The National Scholastic Press Association has an opening for Director of Community Engagement. The director of community engagement is a new position with the organization, reflecting new priorities and reorganization. The director of community engagement is responsible for coordinating activities where NSPA members connect, engage and network. NSPA and ACP provide opportunities for student journalists and their advisers to improve their knowledge, skills and craft through educational programs such as workshops and conventions and through galleries and example materials. This position requires someone who understands incremental tasks within a larger scope; someone with the skills to take initiative, to work independently and to work on a team. The position requires ability to prioritize work assignments, to multi-task and to perform related tasks outside the job description. Reporter: The Daily News in Wahpeton, N.D., and Breckenridge, Minn., is seeking a general assignment reporter who can handle a variety of stories from compelling features to city and government coverage. The ability to cover a wide-range of subjects is crucial, while also being able to manage time property to include special section work and daily news writing. Photography experience and newspaper experience and/or journalism degree preferred. The Daily News is a five-day a week paper, publishing Tuesday-Friday and Sunday. The Daily News is an award-winning daily in southeastern North Dakota. News Editor/Reporter: Three small weekly newspaper company seeking an energetic, enterprising news editor/reporter for two neighboring community papers, The Clara City (MN) Herald and The Raymond-Prinsburg (MN) News. This position has never been offered before as it will chart a new course in operations for these two ‘next door’ weeklies with substantial common editorial interests. We hope to hire two such journalists, and this team will replace a long-term editor (20 years) at one location, as well as a short-time editor at the second. Both are leaving on their own terms and in good graces with the publishers. As mentioned, in forming this team we are hoping to hire two people who will be able do many if not all the same duties, however one taking the lead in directing the advertising efforts while the other will lead the editorial effort. Although each individual will have his or her area of leadership, we expect the duties to be shared. One important facet of this position is that the employee must be willing to relocate to Clara City or Raymond, for the purpose of intimately knowing the community he or she is covering. We are also seeking a person willing to integrate and become involved in the community and its activities. Some of the responsibilities of this new position include: •News gathering for both newspapers --covering crucial local news stories and features --coordinating free lance reporting, including sports --competency in digital photography •Assisting with sales strategies of both newspapers --helping plan and implement special projects in cooperation with other staff members --assuming a share of advertising sales responsibility •Composition of newspapers --assist overall creative pagination of both newspapers •Daily operations --monitoring and mentoring fellow employees to utilize and further their talents --maintain a good working relationship with employees and publishers --cultivate a positive impression of the newspapers in the communities --work diligently for the editorial and financial success of the newspaper company.  In short, this person will need to be highly organized, energetic, creative and willing to play a chief role in producing high quality community newspapers. Pride in his or her work is essential.  We are using Macintosh computers and Adobe CS3 software. We are completely digital in our layout. These newspapers are located approximately 8 miles apart and both serve the consolidated MACCRAY school district. Each paper also covers two city councils (Clara City and Maynard, and Raymond and Prinsburg), and its county (Chippewa and Kandiyohi). The private CMCS school is covered by the R-P News. The Kerkhoven Banner works in harmony to the extent possible with the Herald and News. Compensation is an annual salary of $30,000, one week paid vacation, mileage and monthly contribution toward health insurance. This is a full time position.
